Course Description

This course explores the history of women in Western Europe from 1000-1500, with a particular emphasis on the late medieval period. We start with an exploration of the ideological and theoretical frameworks through which women were viewed and gendered as female and then turn to consider various aspects of women’s lives including motherhood, marriage, sexuality, and religion. We’ll also explore the experiences of specific categories of women such as transwomen, female warriors and generals, female authors, sex workers, and noblewomen. The overall aim of this course is to introduce you to the study of medieval women’s and gender history both historiographically (i.e. how historians have approached it) and methodologically (how to research it yourself).
