For this project, you can create an artistic representation on any topic related to women and gender in medieval Europe. You can use whatever media you would like! For more details, see below.

Proposal

The proposal for your artistic representation should include:

  • A discussion of what topic you plan to explore in  your artistic representation. Develop this discussion around a research question, for example “What did the daily lives of Jewish women look like in medieval Catalonia?” (one paragraph)
  • A description of the artistic medium you have chosen and why you want to work in it for this project. (one paragraph)
  • A brief description of what you hope your finished artistic piece will look like (one paragraph). At this point, you are proposing a potential shape for the project but it can, and probably will, change as you continue with your research and artistic work.

Project Guidelines

For this project, create an artistic representation related to any topic on women and gender in medieval Europe. Your representation should be based on your analysis of evidence from primary and secondary sources.

  • You can work in the mediums of painting, sculpture, drawing, collage or a combination.
  • Submit a 1000-1250 word essay with your artistic representation (see below for details).
  • Include a bibliography (formatted according to the style of your major).

How you develop and construct your visual representation is up to you. It can be as abstract (or not) as you want. The key is the essay that accompanies your piece and explains its intention to your audience.

Explanatory Essay

Accompanying your artistic piece, please write a 1000-1250 word essay explaining it. This essay must cover:

  • Why you chose this specific medium.
  • Provide an overview of your topic and why you chose it.
  • Explain what each section of your piece represents and how it relates to your topic.
  • Discuss how the primary and secondary sources you read influenced your representation.
  • It should also include citations.
